Be Filled With the Holy Spirit

The Bible says that in order to go to heaven we must be born again.  In John 3: 5 -7 it says,

  • Jesus  answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom  of God.
  • That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of  the Spirit is spirit.
  • Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Being born again does not refer to a physical rebirth, but a spiritual one.  When we become born again and are saved, we are like spiritual babies.  Jesus said that we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless we become as .  In Matthew 19:13-14 it says,

  • Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
  • But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

In Matthew 18:2-3 it says,

  • And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
  • And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become  as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

How does a little child act?  Children have childlike faith.  They look up to their parents and simply believe.  The do not question, they just reach out in faith.  Jesus said that we must be like children in order to receive from the Lord.  We must have an attitude of total .  Little babies depend totally on their parents, and God wants us to depend on Him.  We are like children before our heavenly Father.  Since God is a good Father, we know that He gives good gifts to His children.  He would not give us anything that would be bad for us or harm us.  In Matthew 7:7-11 it says,

  • Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
  • For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and  to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
  • Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give  him a stone?
  • Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
  • If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children,  how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things  to them that ask him?

God wants to fill us with the , and the Bible says it is a good gift.  This is why we should not be afraid to pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is for all people who believe and pray to receive it.  In Luke 11:13 it says,

  • If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your  children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy  Spirit to them that ask him?

The Holy Spirit was poured out in Jerusalem on the .  Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told the disciples to wait for the .  In Acts 1:4-5 it says,

  • And, being assembled together  with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,  which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

For  John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the   Holy Ghost not many days hence.

The disciples received the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues on the day of Pentecost.  In Acts 2:1-4 it says,

  • And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a  rushing       mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it  sat  upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Besides the wind and tongues of fire in the , another sign was observed on the day of Pentecost.  When believers receive the Holy Spirit, is the sign or evidence that they have been filled.  In Acts 19, when Paul prayed with the people, they received the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues.  In verses 1-6 it says,

  • And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus:  and finding certain disciples,
  • He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as  heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
  • And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
  • Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe  on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
  • When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
  • And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and  prophesied.

Why did God choose tongues or languages as the sign of the ?  The Bible says that the tongue is an important part of our body, and the hardest to control.  Many of us have said things that we shouldn’t have said, and our words got us into a lot of trouble.  Perhaps it is a good thing that God chose to get control of our tongue through the Holy Spirit.  When we speak in tongues, we yield our speech to the Holy Spirit.

Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?  Here are the steps you should take to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost.  First, you should repent and believe the gospel.  Ask Jesus to be Lord of your life.  Repentance is a decision to turn away from your sins.  We must confess our sins and ask the Lord to forgive us.

After repentance, we receive by full immersion.  In Acts 2:38 it says,

  • Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and  ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

When you pray for the Holy Spirit, you should be comfortable.  You can be standing, sitting or kneeling.  People can receive the Holy Spirit in different places.  You may be in bed at night, you may be in your kitchen cooking, or you may be driving your car.  Some receive it in church when other people are praying with them, or some receive it when they are alone at home.  It doesn’t matter where you are or whom you are with, the important thing is that you receive it!

Ask and believe for God’s gift.  You must believe that God has a very special gift for you, and He wants you to have it.  is always demonstrated by obedience.  Those who ask and believe can be assured of .  As a loving parent would hand out a gift to his child, Jesus is offering you the Holy Spirit.  All you have to do is receive it.receiving the Holy SpiritTrue faith

Begin your prayer by praising and worshipping God.  Nothing pleases God more than our worship and praise.  What better way can we demonstrate our faith in His promises than to begin thanking and worshipping Him before the gift is given.

Pray to God from your heart.  Say something like this: Dear Jesus, I want to thank you for the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  You have already shown me love by forgiving my sins and cleansing me with Your blood.  I believe that the Holy Spirit will fill me with power, love and joy.  Your Word says that you want me to have the Holy Spirit.  So here I am in Your presence like a child, asking and believing that rivers of living water will begin to flow out of my innermost being.

This is just a sample prayer.  Talk to God in your own words, like you are having a conversation with a good friend.  An expression of gratitude and faith always merits a divine response.  In order to receive the Holy Spirit, your mouth must be open.  When I received it, I was thanking and praising God.  I was looking upwards and my hands were raised.  Next thing I knew, I saw a bright white light.  Then I felt a feeling of power come down upon me.  I felt a tingling, or heaviness on my tongue.  As I continued to , the preacher told me that I was speaking in tongues.

We do not try to learn how to speak in tongues.  We are seeking the Holy Spirit.  When the Spirit comes inside, it will take over your language.  Let the Spirit submerge and flow out of you.  If you feel something on your tongue, just yield to it.  The Holy Spirit is coming in.  When it comes inside you, it will stay there and you will speak in tongues.  At the same time you will probably feel great peace, joy and love.

Many people have difficulty receiving the Holy Spirit because they think they have to understand it first. We don’t need to figure it out, we just yield to God and receive it.  Once you receive the Spirit, it will teach and guide you.  It will lead you to all knowledge and truth.  The Holy Spirit will speak to you.

Some people are afraid of the Holy Spirit because it represents something supernatural, and unknown.  You don’t need to be afraid, because the Bible says the Holy Spirit is from God.  If it is of God, then you should want to have it.  It will greatly change your life for the better.  You will feel a happiness that you have never known before.

In order to receive the Spirit, we must surrender to its control.  This is difficult for many people to do, but you must trust God enough to be able to give Him total control of your life.  When you surrender control and yield to the Holy Spirit, it will come in.  When the Spirit begins to come in you may have stammering lips.  If this happens, just continue to pray and yield, and you will begin speaking in tongues.  will not force you to speak in tongues, but if you submit to it, it will come in.
